Hey guys and gals,

I've been playing FM and its iterations now for a number of years and while I have certainly struggled more in recent years to play this game, I think Football Manager 2019 may finally be the one that beats me. I genuinely don't know what I'm doing anymore.

The thing I think that is confusing me most is the style presets. Essentially, I don't know if I should be choosing one of the styles such as Tiki Taka etc and sticking to the recommended positions or whether I should be altering them to suit my team. More importantly, I am worried IF I start to tinker with the position roles, am I then slowly losing the tactic that was created for me. I.e. can I still play Tiki Taka if I decide I want an Advanced Forward rather than a Deep Lying Forward for example. Equally as important and baffling, I figure the moment I go into the settings and start altering the match tactics, then I am effectively going against the style I selected in the first point. Is that the point? How can I still be playing Tiki Taka if I change it? Does that make sense to you?

ANYWAY, I am totally flummoxed and now realising I know very little about how to properly balance a team. I even got sacked as Chelsea Manager in September which has got to be some sort of a record. If you guys can provide me with any tips that might help to enlighten me in this crazy journal, that would be great.

Thanks so much!

I know where you are coming from. You can, if you wish, go back the 'old way' of building a tactic. There is an option to start from scratch.
The presets are simply 'rough guide' with suggested roles and duties, TIs etc.You can tweak and adjust as much as you like - just as you always did. The suggestions are for those who like to play a certain way, it sounds like you are like me and prefer to build something with the players at your disposal.

I have had some success on the Demo with the presets, but changed Anchor Man to BWM, PF to AF up front. It's square pegs and round holes - if the preset doesn't fit your players then it needs changing.

I struggled with similar when the green Familiarity discs came in, took me nearly a whole year of trying to make sure the discs were all green for everyone before realizing it didn't really matter. The players play according to their attributes/mentality/morale/Traits along with your TIs and PIs.

Very true, I'm doing a journeyman starting with Arsenal, I want to move around but with top teams. Anything goes right?

FM is essentially a single-player game, so yeah - play it the way you enjoy it.

I always start at a random cub 'Pick a Team For Me', set my quals as suitable for that club, and go from there - I want the best career I can achieve.
Sometimes I'll choose a nation, or region, but otherwise it's random. I will stand or fall on my ability to make a group of players perform.

Can't seem to get it to work.

I open the link and can;t edit it.

I download it as an Excel and formulas are removed.

Would be very interested in running with it for a while, as it looks like something I did for a while, but much better!

Do you find it disagrees with the assistant/game indicators (Green Discs)?

A Journeyman save is a Journeyman - nothing says WHERE the journey starts from.

I know a lot are start unemployed, no experience etc. But hey - you got the quals.

Suffolk,

I appreciate your feedback, my friend. I'm serious about that scenario thing, though. If they really want to see this game take off - bigger than it is - then I think scenarios are the key. It would open up the game for people that ain't necessarily interested in "foot-soccer-ball" (to quote quill18) but still have a peeking interest in sports' management.

It can seem a huge task when you first start playing it, especially if you play like me - total immersion.
There are things you can do to make life easier for yourself< as has been said, taking over a big, rich club makes the financial side easier - you can leave it up to others.
Scouting can be left to the Chief Scout
Transfers can be left to the DoF
Youth teams left to the respective managers
Training and press conferences left to your AssMan

Unfortunately, to keep the simulation realistic, there can't be an 'easy' mode like an arcade game, as it would require a massive change in the way the AI and Match Engine works.

To this end, SI do allow you to delegate most of the mundane tasks to your staff, so have a look around the 'Staff Responsibilities' screen and see what you can delegate. As a new player, focus on one or two aspects of the game and let the staff take care of the rest.

With a big club, with a lot of money, you will have good players and a healthy bank account - your players should be good enough to 'hide' tactical errors, while the finances pretty much look after themselves. You can focus on tactics and transfers to start with.

Remember the YouTubers (well, most of them) have been playing the game for years, know the ins and outs intimately and make it look so easy. The rags-to-riches is a great scenario to play, but you do need to do the groundwork first and learn the game to be able to pull that kind of thing off.

To get to the top of the game with Peterhead will need someone who can get the best out of a limited squad, with little to no budget, few skilled staff and nowt in the bank. Benjy might manage it, I have playing for 10 years and I wouldn't back myself to pull it off.

For easier guides and help, use the forums and dig up some blogs - YouTube is often where the really successful ones show off, although there are some good 'beginner guides' to be found.

Also, are you using any add-on database/skin etc?

I'll have a go:

The 'safe' option is always 'Balanced' team training - however, if you use the squad comparison screen you can work out any general training that needs improving. Remember that training, even general team training, is just a way to increase attribute values, so your players will work on attributes.

MATCH PREP: I always prefer one day before the match on match prep - pre-season and first few weeks of season usually keep it on Tactics, from then on it depends on my opposition, but this is used ONLY to prepare for one game with no real long-term benefits.

INDIVIDUAL: use this to train attributes. Position training is just a group of attributes that are trained together.

So, assuming everything is set to average, look at individual players and workloads - a player has to go through team training, as well as follow his individual traning SO anyhitng you add from here will increase his workload - focused training on specific attributes and PPM training will work him harder. You need to be aware of what all your players are doing individually to understand how general training affects them.

SO, my preferred method is - get them match fit pre-season. This can only be done through playing friendlies so my pre-season is a friendly every three days or so, squad rotation and tactical familiarity.

General Training is set as 'average' as my default. If I have two games in the next seven days I drop it to Low, no games for a week I increase it to High. BUT you have to be mindful of players individual workloads.

REst day after the game is standard for me, and occasionally give players an extra day manually if they are high injury risk.

Across the whole club, my u18s are training heavily, training is better for them than matches.
Reserves / u23s are training and/or being loaned out - match time is more beneficial once they are over 18

Hope that helps

It depends on what else is running in the background at the time, it is just a rough indication of how fast the data is processing so load on your processor will affect the star rating.

It depends on how much you have spent. Remember your transfer budget pays for signing on fees and agent fees as well I think so it's not just the fee you need to factor in.

Remember you can tweak the transfer/wage budget if you have any left in the wages - keeping under budget means your nboard will be happier with you and are more likely to agree to spending on facilities when u request it.

One of the most valuable and informative on any FM18 forum I have seen to date, thank you so much.

Now, can you please explain a Segunde Volante and demonstrate why I should use one instead of Enganche?

Sadly not, BUT, an alternative is to keep him happy - use the Praise Conduct talk. Offer a new contract if he is two years or less from end date, or set a ridiculously high Asking Price to deter would-be suitors.

Sounds dodgy to me.

As Susie says, the full game has been available since November, and I haven't seen anywhere advertising pre-order for FM19 yet but even so, that Beta won;t be available until around October I think.

Where did you order the game from?

Yeah, I often run a LLM save, and I thought the players contract length was limited by squad status / age.

Running the level 10 database at the moment, and lower than Vanarama I could only ever get a one full season contract, ie: signing mid-season to the end of the following season maximum in Isthmian League.

Part-timers are odd creatures though, forever moaning about too much training when, in fact, due to fixture congestion, you haven't trained for a month!

Personally, I use a few on every edition.

as mons said - I also view the real names fix as an essential. Competitions and teams with their proper names, and not the fictional names forced by licensing issues

I also use a kitpack, and a logo pack so the teams now all look like the real thing (also a 3d match engine kit as well if its available!)

DF11 Facepacks are another essential for me, the players look like who they are. I have also found a 'newgen' facepack, with random real faces for the newgen players.
If you play Italian leagues, there shouldn't be a problem finding packs for those teams, plus the major European leagues when playing in European comps,

Now, I am always given the latest release by my daughter, every year for my birthday, and I usually have all these files pre-downloded, extracted and ready to go by then!

I am currently looking for a stadium design mod option, as FM18's lower league grounds all look the same, and all too big for the club - any suggestions?
#423567 FM18 Swap position player instruction - where is it?

..I'm not seeing this. can anyone give me very specific walk through of where it is? I've tried the tactics > players > position and it isn't there. I've looked on player instructions and it isn't there. You say it's at the bottom of the player instructions but it isn't there for me. I have cross aim and cross frequency but that's it

Not at the game so not specific walk through sorry:
It doesn't appear to be available with the Personalised Instructions in the PI window, but it is, I think, available for the positional instructions. So you can have positions swapping during the game, but not specific players.
