Just to boil it back, you said you couldn't understand why Terry was preferred over Ferdinand. I just outline why, I didn't however say that Terry was a good choice, just merely a better choice than Ferdinand.
There's a certain historical, partly logical, reasoning in having a strong mature leader at the back. Maybe that's where Hodgson's desires lie. But if I was to offer my unsarcastic opinion neither should have been even mooted for selection since 2010.
England have a very odd problem about bringing new players in, or at least they did until Hodgson. Say what you like, he is bringing in more players to the international scene than other managers. Which is a good thing. Rio Ferdinand and John Terry have been playing for England for over a decade and have achieved nothing. It's sad that we're even debating their merits, sad because it shows, typically, the dearth of talent England has.
The debate about Ferdinand only exists because the media wants it to exist, he has been non existant at international level for a long time and they are only doing so because it's a great story, a scandalous mishandling of an explosive situation involving skullduggery and racism.
Sadly if only the reality was that. The reasoning is that Hodgson just thinks Ferdinand is shit and Terry isn't. I'm inclined to agree.

Gerrard was definitely one of our better players at the Euros, but we were appalling and the football we played was dogshit. We were overrun in midfield and his better moments came when he was standing on the right wing or taking set-pieces. In a more progressive system that Roy is suggesting we'll be playing I don't think he'll cut it, especially at 34, in the heat of Brazil, when he's already been regressing for 2 years now.

I actually said I thought it was strange Roy would make his feelings on wanting Terry (who has wronged) so clear whilst at the same time stubbornly ignoring a defender of similar age, experience and ability and doing so in a slightly disrespectful manner, that's all. I agree with you that neither should be in the squad if England are looking to move forward towards the next WC.
I don't agree that Rio is shit and Terry isn't. From watching both players regularly I just think that's rubbish, but each to their own. You're suggesting I'm only saying this because the media are making it a story but it's the media who have been overplaying the narrative that Rio is a perma-crocked past-it who can no longer cut it and many people have gone along with this, including yourself. Having watched every United game, I can tell you that it's just not the case. I couldn't care less what the media write, I barely pay any attention to it, let alone let it influence my own opinions

I don't really see the fuss over what Hodgson did. He was asked a question by a fan, and he gave an honest answer. I actually find that refreshing to see a manager just tell it how is. More so when it's Rio, someone who hasn't really played much International football over recent years. I'm sure it wasn't all that surprising to hear that Rio's England career is more or less done.
I can see it being a bit more of an issue if it was someone who had been a regular over the last couple of years, but not with someone who's hardly featured.
I think Fanny is spot on though with what he's said.

'Is Rio in the squad?' 'No'
As you say, he's not been in the squad recently and I don't think it's a surprise that he's not now. But if he did go on to say:
'I have to say it is over for him and England. It has got to be the end of the road.'
Without first talking to Rio and telling him that, I think that's very unprofessional, and that's why Hodgson has tried hard to distance himself from that part of the comments.

I don't agree with the outrage expressed at his comments but I also don't think it's right for the England manager to be discussing such matters on the tube before he's even spoken to the player. His decision itself isn't under question here, it's the manner in which that decision came into the public domain.
